Searching
by State Registration
To access the
Product search, click on the blue Product button
from the home page.
Using
the Product Name Search
The Product
Name Search allows the user to search for formulated pesticide
products by name or registration number. Formulated products contain
active ingredients and other ingredients that are not pesticidally
active.
What
you type in
To find information
on a pesticide product, type ONE of the following into
the Search box and click the "Search" button:
- The
name of the product. If you don't know the name
precisely, type in only the first few letters of the name.
- The
U.S. EPA product
registration number. For U.S. products, this
number can be found on the label of the pesticide product.
It will look like xxxxxx-yyyyy(-zzzzzz). The first set of
numbers before the first hyphen (up to six digits) identify
the registrant or company that registered the pesticide
with U.S. EPA. The set of numbers after the first hyphen
(up to five digits) identify the product, and the last set
of numbers (up to six digits), if present, indicate the
distributor of the pesticide product.
There
are several additional choices you have for the Product
Name search:

-
You
can have the search engine find products that Start with
the word or part of a word that you typed in. This is the
default setting. For example, if you are interested in Roundup,
but don't know whether it is spelled "Roundup"
or "Round Up", you could type "Round"
into the box, you will get a long list of products, all
of which start with "Round." Alternatively, you
can have the search engine find a word or part of a word
anywhere it occurs in a product name by clicking on the
Anywhere in name button. Using Anywhere in name
may help with a problematic search that doesn't work because
the term you enter might not be the first word of the product
name.
-
You can also search by product registration number by
clicking on the Registration Number button
and typing the number into the box.
What the
search engine does
The search engine searches the product database for the word (or
part of a word) typed into the search box. The product name database
contains about 100,000 parent product names and another 300,000
names used by distributors of the products, e.g., the grocery store
brand name for a product. Not all of these products are presently
registered for use in the U.S. The search engine default is to search
for All Products, both actively registered and cancelled.
The
search results list
After you
have clicked on the Search button, the search engine
returns a list of all products that match the search term you
entered. The list provides the name of the pesticide product,
U.S. EPA registration number, the product status (whether it
is active--legally available for sale in the U.S.--or cancelled),
the acute hazard warning label, the status as a PAN
Bad Actor product or restricted use product, and the manufacturer
of the product. A definition for any underlined term
can be accessed by clicking on the term. Clicking on the More
button will take you to a Product Information
page with more detailed information on the product.
You can print this
list or export it
to another data processing program such as Microsoft Excel or
Access.
Only 100 results are displayed on a page. Sometimes a search
will give you more than 100 results. To
view the next set, click on the Next button
at either the top or the bottom of the page.
Using
the Product Category Search
The Product
Category Search allows you to search for a set of products
that meet certain criteria. You can apply criteria to both the
product itself and the active ingredients contained in the product.
The search is an "and" type of search, where all
of the criteria must be met before the product is included to
the results list.
There are
eight different criteria you can specify besides the name of the
product: Company Name, Product Formulation, Product Registration
Year, Product Toxicity Group, Product Uses, Commodity (Crop) or
Site where pesticide is used, and Pest Name. If you know the pest
specifically, there is generally no need to also select a Product
Use Type (insecticide, herbicide, etc.).

You can limit your search to only activly registered products
or only parent product names using the buttons at the top of this
search section.

For the
active ingredients criteria:
You can also apply search criteria to active ingredients contained
within products. There are three different criteria you can specify:
Chemical Toxicology, Regulatory Category, and Chemical Classification.

NOTE:
The more criteria you specify, the slower the search will be. Be
patient with complex searches.
For example,
you could search for pesticide products that meet the following
criteria:
Company
Name: Monsanto
Pest
name:
aphids
Commodity
(Crop):
cotton
Chemical
Toxicology:
Highly acute toxins
Regulatory
Category:
CA Registered
The end result
of this search is a list of highly acutely toxic pesticides made
by Monsanto, registered for use in California, and approved for
use on aphids in cotton.
You do not
need to use all criteria--you may only wish to use one or two.
For example, you might want to find all Herbicides (Use Type)
registered by Novartis (Company Name). Or maybe you'd like to
know what products are registered for use on roaches (Pest Name)
that contain active ingredients that are Known/Probable carcinogens
(Chemical Toxicology). There are a number of ways in which these
search criteria can be used to select a list of pesticides you
are interested in. Experiment and see for yourself!

Finding
All Products Containing a Specific Active Ingredient
The only
way to find a list of all products that contain a specific active
ingredient is to do a Chemical Search for the
chemical in question, go to the Chemical Detail page by clicking
on the More button, then click on the Chemical
ID button. At the bottom of the Chemical ID section
will be a clickable link called View U.S. Products,
which finds all products registered in the U.S. that contain
that active ingredient.

Troubleshooting
the Product Search
There are
a number of things to try if you are having trouble finding the
pesticide you are interested in:
-
Click
on the Clear button, to clear information from previous
searches, and try again.
-
Check
the spelling of the product name.
- Check the
spelling of the criteria you type in for the product information
(Product name, Company name, Pest name, Commodity).
-
Try
searching with the Anywhere in Name button on. This
search will take a little longer, but may provide better results.
-
Be sure
you are searching for only one product, i.e., you cannot
type in "roundup, raid" in hopes of pulling up both
Roundup and Raid at once.
-
Try typing
only part of the word into the search box. For example,
you might type in "Weed" to find Weed 'n Feed. The
more general your search, the longer your results list will
be.
-
To get an
even longer list of results, try typing in only the first
letter (or number) of the name of the pesticide. This
type of search will return a list of all products that start with
that letter or number. This may return quite a long list of results
(alphabetical) and you may need to view
several pages before you find the pesticide you are interested
in.
-
Check
to be sure the All Products button and the Parent
& Distributor Products button are on to maximize
the number of products returned.
-
If you
are doing a Product Category Search, do not also enter
a name unless you have a good reason to.

Searching
by state registration
A
link is provide to search sites external to the PAN Pesticide Database
that allow you to search for products registered for use in several
U.S. states. Select the state of interest to go to that site.
