Searching the California Pesticide Use Database

When you click on the Search CA Pesticide Use button, you will be able to search for pesticide use in California for any combination of chemical, crop, or county. The results provide information on pesticide use for the years 1991 through 2000.

Use the pull-down menus provided to select your choice of chemical, crop and geographic area. When you select something from the menus, the appropriate code number is automatically entered into the search box.

NOTE: The search engine ONLY uses the code numbers to search. Your search will not be successful results if you type the name of a pesticide, crop or county into the search box.

NOTE: You must select SOMETHING from each pull-down menu for the search to work.

The results returned provide information for all possible permutations of the selected pesticides, crops and geographic areas. For example, if you selected diazinon as the chemical, apricots and cherries as the crops, and San Joaquin and All California as the geographic areas, you will obtain information for:

  • Diazinon use on apricots in San Joaquin county
  • Diazinon use on apricots in All California
  • Diazinon use on cherries in San Joaquin county
  • Diazinon use on cherries in All California

The information provided includes total pounds of pesticide used, application count (number of applications of the pesticide made), field count (number of different fields to which the pesticide was applied, acres planted, acres treated, and application rate for the selected crop/county combination for all years for which data are available. Also given is a Record Number, which is helpful for keeping together information for a given pesticide/crop/county combination if you export the information into an Excel file.

NOTE: The acres planted number does not always accurately reflect the total number of acres planted for a particular crop/chemical/county combination!! Read the detailed information on this subject and use the results with caution! The best way to obtain a reasonably correct estimate of the total acres planted for a particular crop or geographic area is to search for All pesticides for that particular crop or geographic area. Otherwise, the acreage estimate will be low.

Finding information for pesticides and crops not in the pull-down menus

All counties and regions are included in the Geographic Area menu; however, because there are so many different crops grown and so many different pesticides used in California, we did not include every possible chemical and crop in these pull-down menus. You can still find this information--you'll just need to know the appropriate code numbers to enter in the search boxes. Here's how:

  • For pesticides: If the pesticide you wish to search for is not in the list, select Find a chemical NOT in the list below from the pull-down menu. A new window will open that allows you to search the chemical database for the chemical code for the pesticide of interest. Enter the name of the chemical into the search box and the search engine will return the CA DPR Chem Code, which you can then type into the search box on the main Search Use page.

  • For crops: At present, only crops with over 5,000 acres planted in California in 1999 are included in the pop-up list, but the data for any crop is accessible if you know the site code. For crops not in the list, you can find the site code numbers by going to the list of crops accessible from the CA Crop Use button on the CA PUR Search page.

If you cannot find a crop in the pull-down menu, another possibility to consider is that a crop is part of a group of crops that are in the pull-down menu. For example, peaches are not listed separately, but are instead included as part of "Stonefruits".

Troubleshooting the California Pesticide Use Search

The first thing you should always do when tracking down a problem is to Clear the previous search criteria. Also be sure you are entering ONLY code numbers in the search boxes. Entering crop, pesticide or county names will not work.

Other problems that might arise are listed below. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

Problem: You would like information on pesticide use for 1991-2000, not just 2000.
Solution:
Use the Search CA Pesticide Use button instead of the buttons that select individual crops or counties.

Problem: You can't find the pesticide you are interested in on the list of pesticides in the pull-down menu.
Solution: From the pull-down menu, select Find a pesticide NOT in this list. Click here for more information on how to use this feature.

Problem: You can't find the crop you are interested in on the list of crops in the pull-down menu.
Solution #1: The crop you are interested in may be part of a group. Check the list for a group that may contain the crop of interest. Click here for more information on this problem.

Solution #2: Go to the list of crops accessible from the CA Crop Use button on the CA PUR Search page.
Select the Site Code number for the crop and enter this number into the "Select a Crop" box.

Problem: You get no results or only error messages when you do a search for which you know there must be data.
Solution: Be sure that you are entering ONLY code numbers into the search boxes. Entering names of pesticides, crops or geographic areas will not give results.

Problem: You get the error message "The only valid entries are 'All', 'Top', or CA Chem Codes.
Solution: You have entered a chemical NAME into the Pesticide Chemical search box. You must enter the chemical code number. Click here for more information.

Problem: You get the error message "The only valid entries are 'All', 'Top', or CA Site Codes.
Solution: You have entered a crop NAME into the Crop or Site search box. You must enter the site code number. Click here for more information.

Problem: When you click Search, the only thing that happens is that the search page re-loads
Solution: You have entered a county or region NAME into the Geographic Area search box. You must enter the county code number(s). Click here for more information.

Problem: You can not seem to get pesticide use information over all years (1991-2000) for "Top Crops", "Top Chemicals", or "Top Counties".
Solution: The "Top Crops", "Top Chemicals", or "Top Counties" change from year to year. This information is only available for the latest year of data.

Problem: The "Acres Planted" number seems too low.
Solution: If you have searched for use of a single pesticide on a crop, the "Acres Planted" number will almost certainly be low. The only way to get a reasonable estimate of "Acres Planted" is to search for "All Pesticides" used on a crop. Even then, the acreage may not be correct. Click here for more information on this topic.

Problem: The "Acres Treated" number seems too high.
Solution: The value of "Acres Treated" is the sum of the acres of a particular crop treated with a particular pesticide. If a crop is treated more than once, the number of "Acres Treated" is counted more than once. Click here for more information on this topic.
