Pesticide tutorial and references

This page provides a brief description of supporting documentation available for the PAN Pesticide Database. This extensive documentation introduces the user to concepts used in describing the toxicity and regulatory status of pesticides. It also defines the terms used in the database (also accessible by clicking on any of the underlined terms on the data pages), cites the data sources, and discusses the accuracy, currency, and comprehensiveness of each source. A User's Manual is also available for assistance with searching the database, exporting and printing data.

About the Data

Discusses the scope of the PAN Pesticide Database, the accuracy of the various data sets, value-added features, and validation and review procedures used to ensure the accuracy of the database. New data sets to be added in the next update of the database are also listed here.

General Information

Provides general information on what pesticides are and how pesticide active ingredients differ from formulated pesticide products. Also defines use types, chemical classifications (with representative structures) and the various identification numbers associated with pesticide active ingredients. Defines the logic for combining chemicals into groups based on chemical similarity, creating a "parent" chemical and a group of related chemicals. Includes links to data sources for this information.

Pesticide Poisoning Diagnostic Tool

Describes the methodology used in the Pesticide Poisoning Diagnostic Tool. Defines the ranking system used to identify most likely cause of poisoning. Provides information on how state-specific reporting resources were obtained.

Toxicity Information

Defines the different types of chronic and acute toxicity pesticides cause in humans and animals, including cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, endocrine disruption, and cholinesterase inhibition. Also defines the "PAN Bad Actor" label. Includes links to data sources for toxicity information.

Ecotoxicity Information

Explains how ecotoxicity tests are conducted and the methods PAN used to determine Summary Ecotoxicity Ratings. Defines terms used in the ecotoxicity data presented. Includes links to data sources for this information.

Regulatory Information

Provides general information on how pesticides are registered for use in the U.S. Provides specific information on the international regulation of pesticides as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), chemicals requiring prior informed consent (PIC) before export, or World Health Organization (WHO) Obsolete pesticides. Provides an overview of the European Union pesticide re-evaluation process mandated by European Commission Directive 91/414/EEC. Defines terms used in the U.S. and California regulatory data presented. Includes links to data sources for this information.

Pesticide Product Information

Defines terms used in the information presented for formulated pesticide products. Includes links to data sources for this information.

Pesticide Use Information

Provides information on how pesticide use is estimated nationwide in the United States overall. Also describes pesticide use reporting (PUR) systems in several states, including California, New York, and Oregon. Details are provided on the methods PAN uses to process the California PUR data to obtain summary pesticide use information for every combination of crop, chemical, and geographic area in California. Includes links to the original data sources.

Pesticides in Water and Air

Defines and describes the physical properties of pesticide chemicals that affect their ability to move through the environment in air and water, including water solubility, soil adsorption coefficient, half-life, Henry's Law constant, and vapor pressure. Also defines and describes a variety of water quality standards, criteria and guidelines. Includes links to original data sources.

AirPIC

The AirPIC tutorial explains how to use the AirPIC, what type of information is available, and discussions on how to use this information. The AirPIC provides tools for understanding which pesticides are more likely than other to appear in California's air. Based on county, crop or human toxicity characteristic, and pesticide selections the AirPIC dynamically generates data tables and graphs that can be used to understand where, when, and which pesticides are more likely than others to appear in the air we breathe. This tutorial explains how to make these selections over the course of the AirPIC's four steps. Also included are details about the original sources, data quality, and methods used to analyze and compile this information.

WaterPIC

The WaterPIC tutorial explains how to use the WaterPIC, what type of information is available, and discussions on how to use this information. WaterPIC brings together California PUR, surface water sampling, and water quality standard information in one site. Based on geographic area, time period, and pesticide selections the WaterPIC dynamically generates data tables and graphs that can be used to understand relationships been pesticide uses and surface water pesticide concentrations. This tutorial explains how to make these selections over the course of five steps. Also included are details about the original sources, data quality, and methods used to analyze and compile this information.
